The school’s men basketball team is known as the Gamecocks. The team made the transition to the NCAA Division I in the 1993-94 academic year. They won the Div II men's basketball national championship in 1985.

The Gamecocks ended the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 7-22 and 5-15 in the conference, finishing in the last place of the OVC standings.

The team was led for an 8-year period by Mike LaPlante who's contract will not be renewed after the 2007-08 season and leaves JSU with an 95-137 career record.

The Gamecocks play their home games at the Pete Matthews Coliseum in Jacksonville.
