The Appalachian State Mountaineers had its first season in 1919. They joined the NCAA Division I Southern Conference in 1971 in hands of coach Press Maravich. The Mountaineers have won 8 Conference regular seasons and one conference tournament.
Their have been notable coaches for ASU like Bob Light(1957-1972) who had a record of 211-178, Tom Apke from 1986-1996 who had a record of 139 and 147 and finally Francis Hoover who had a record of 133-128 from 1945-1957. Moreover is also to mention one of the greatest players for the Mountaineers, Don King who is the all-time leading scorer with 1,794 points from the seasons 1958 to 1961.
The 2006-2007 season the Mountaineers made their case as one of the best teams in school history. ASU finished with an overall record of 25-8 and a conference record 15-3.
The Mountaineers set also a school record with its 15th SoCon win of the season and non-conference wins with nine. This season 2007-2008 the Appalachian State University Mountaineers ended the regular season first with an overall record of 18-13 and a conference record of 13-7. The Mountaineers got to the quarterfinals of the Conference Tournament but lost against UNC Greensboro 63-46.
The team lost quality players after the 2007-08 season, but Coach Houston Fancher has recruited good talent this 2008-09 period to put the team back in the top positions in the Conference.
