The Cougars first men’s basketball team was formed in 1900 and joined the SoCon in 1998 after been in the TAAC for several years. The Cougars men’s basketball team won the NAIA Tournament in 1983 and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament under the leadership of John Kresse, for whom their arena is named. In addition, Ken Gustofson was a incredible player for the Cougars, who is currently the all-times leader scorer for the school with 2,135 points during his playing time from 1971-1975.
The Cougars mens’s basketball team was part of the NAIA League for several years, however in 1998 the College of Charleston became a NCAA Division I in the TAAC. The Cougars had won from 1993-1994 season through 1997-1998 the TAAC Championship until they joined the Southern Conference.
Currently in the SoCon Charleston has won 6 regular season championships
and went to a NCAA tournament in 1999.
Many teams finished the 2007-08 Southern Conference season with average performances; unfortunately Charleston was not on that list. The non-conference schedule was to hard for the team to follow, having many loses on the way.
Coach Bobby Cremins wants to avoid another bad season, aiming for Davidson this 2008-09 period, with a very talented recruiting class.
