Davidson College Wildcats started their men’s basketball program in 1907 in hands of Coach J. W. Rhea. After several years the program became a success. The Wildcats has won 18 SoCon regular seasons and have appear in 9 NCAA Tournaments including last year’s.

Innumerable great coaches have became part of the program, two of them Lefty Driesell who have been awarded has the SoCon Coach of the year 4 times and presently Coach Bob Mckillop who have been named 6 times in his 19 years at Davidson. Coach Mckillop has an overall record of 311-218 and this is his 19 season with the Wildcats.

On other side 2 of the greatest players and named All-American during their time are Fred Hetzel, who is the school second all-time leader in points with 2,032 points and all-time leader in

rebounds with 1,111 for the seasons 1962-65, and John Gerdy who is the all-time leader scorer with 2,483 points in the seasons 1976-79. Both players were ranked in the top 17th scorers in the nation 3 times.

For the season 2006-2007 the Wildcats were unstoppable, they finished as the SoCon regular season and tournament champions with an overall record of 29-5 and a conference record of 17-1. The NCAA Tournament was their second straight trip and their third straight 20 win-season.

This 2007-2008 season Davidson ended the regular season in first place with a conference record of 20-0. The Wildcats won the third straight Southern Conference Tournament Title beating Elon 65-49. That’s Davidson 22nd consecutive victory, the longest current streak in the country. The Wildcats are currently 26-6 and will face Gonzaga in the first game of the NCAA Tournament.
