College Basketball - Southern Conference
Furman Paladins
Location: Greenville, SC First Year of Basketball: 1908 |
For a period of 82 years after the establishment of the school in 1826, the first basketball team was formed with an overall record of 3-1.
Known as the Paladins, in 1953-1954 Southern Conference season, the men’s basketball team rallied and reached the 2nd place.
Franklin Delano Selvy, nicknamed “The Corbin Comet” is a former Paladin’s basketball player and is best remembered for scoring 100 points in a college game against Newberry College, the only NCAA Division 1 player ever to do so.
During the eight years regime of coach Joe Williams at the Furman University, he started the first year as a fifth placer
and 2nd placer in each next two years. By 1973-1974 season, the Paladins basketball squad captured their first ever Southern Conference championship title. Furman University defended the title the following year.
The 7-23 record last 2007-08 season put Coach Jeff Jackson in a position were he had to re-structure the team and aim for higher quality recruitment for the 2008-09 season.
