The Catamounts joined the Southern Conference in 1976. After 20 years of painstaking hard work, finally, in 1996 the Western Carolina University’s basketball squad reached the final and captured the Southern Conference South Divisions Championship trophy.
Ronnie Carr, Greg Dennis, Mel Gibson, Tommy Lavelle, Henry Logan, Bob McGinn and Thomas "Bubba" Wilson are some of the notable former rosters of the Catamounts.
