The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball progrem joined the Southland Conference, member of the NCAA Division I, in 1997.
With the help from the coaching assistants Roman Banks, Morris Scott and Larry Cordaro, the head coach Yarbrough will be in charge of the Lions for the 2008 season.
The SLU men's basketball team reached won consecutive regular season titles in 2004 and 2005; also in 2005 they managed to participate in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships.
The Lion's mascot wasn't borned with the name Rommie. Initially the SLU mascot was called Lobo (spanish for
wolf), but the name never gain popularity, and not too long after was renamed. The name Rommie was chosen to honor a former Southeastern athlete and faculty member, the famous Hollis "Rommie" Wilson.
