The Stephen F. Austin State University men's basketball team are nicknamed Lumberjacks as an acknowledgement to the forest industry, which represents a major piece of the economy of the area.

Next to the head coach, Danny Kaspar, are the Assistant Coaches Brette Tanner, Ulric Maligi and Doug Karleskint; and the Administrative Assistant Doug Nichols.

Lumberjack's main rivals are Northwestern State University and Sam Houston University.

The SFA is part of the NCAA Division I in the Southland Conference, in which they haven't won a title. Nevertheless they won the National Invitation

Tournament (NIT) in 1987 and for the second time, they are going to be participating in the NIT 2008.
