The Jackson State Tigers formed its first men’s basketball team in 1950 and joined the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 1960.
The Tigers men’s basketball program is one of the strongest programs in the school with 9 SWAC regular season Championships, 5 SWAC Tournament Championships and 3 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers have had 13 players in the NBA over the years. Some of them are Ed Manning, Audie Norris, Gene Short, Purvis Short, Henry Ward, Dwayne Whitfield and some more.
For the 2006-2007 season the Tigers finished 2th place in the regular season standings with an overall record of 21-14 and winning the SWAC Tournament Championship in 2007 against Mississippi Valley State. In their 3rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament the Tigers were beaten in the first round against the actual champion Florida 112-69.
At the present in the 2007-2008 season Jackson State finished the regular season in 4th place with an overall record of 13-19 and a 10-8 conference record. With these results, the Tigers expected a similar or better season this 2008-2009.
