The Tigers joined the Southwestern Atletic Conference in 1954. The first men’s basketball team for the Tigers was formed in 1935 in hands of Coach C.T Ewell.

For the other hand Coach Robert Moreland (current coach) has been with the Tigers for 26 seasons with an overall record of 399-34. Moreland has a career coach record overall of 672-420.

Two of the most prominent players for the Tigers have been Harry Kelly, who is the top-scorer of all-time with a record of 3,066 points from 1979-1983 seasons and Bennie Swan, who is the second top-scorer with 3,008 points in the seasons 1954-1958.

In the season 2006-2007 Texas Southern finished 5th in the regular season with 9-9 conference record and an overall record of 14-17.

In the present season 2007-2008 Texas Southern ended the season last (10th place) in the regular season with an overall record of 7-25 and a conference record of 6-12.
