The North Texas Mean Greens are competing in the Sun Belt conference in the NCAA Division I since 2001. Before joining the SBC they played with the Southland Conference where they won one Conference Tournament Championship title in 1988.
Long time Coach Johnny Jones leads the team since their affiliation in the SBC. They have won the 2007 Sun Belt Tournament Championship with five straight wins in the season.
In the beginning the Mean Greens couldn’t find an official mascot and its name. They had tried with names like "Normalites" and "the Normal Boys," but it wasn’t very satisfying. In the fall of 1921 a student petition was started to
decide on this issue. In 1922 the Eagle was chosen as the official mascot but was named Scrappy just in the late 60s.
