The South Alabama Jaguars are competing in the Sun Belt conference in the NCAA Division I since 1976. They have won five Conference Tournament Championships (1979, ’80, ’89, ’97, ’98, 2007 and 2008) and eight Conference Regular Season Championships (1989, ’97, ’97 and 2006) so far.
Since 1998 the team plays its home games at the Mitchell Center, a 10,041-seated arena on campus.
The jaguar was selected in the late 1960s to be South Alabama’s mascot. Around ten years later a contest was held to give the jaguar a name and South Paw was chosen. The South Paw represents the men’s basketball team ever since.
