The school men’s basketball team is known as the Cougars and the first team was created in 1946.
The University of Houston men college basketball has produced 19 All-American players and 3 of the NBA’s 50 greatest players becoming one of the best and most successful sport programs in the country.
Two of the most famous and accomplished basketball players are Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Olajuwon was the first Cougar player to earn the outstanding honors at a NCAA Final Four, while Drexler became the first Cougar to earn all-conference honors three times in his career.
Both were picked in the NBA Draft and became part of the NBA’s 50 greatest players.
Later in his career Drexler became coach of the University during the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 seasons.
More recently, the Cougars had one of their most impressive seasons winning 24 games and participating in a postseason tournament for the third straight year during the season 2007-08. This season the Cougars are aiming for a place in the NCAA Tournament.
