The University of Memphis’s first basketball team was founded in 1920. The school men’s basketball program is known as the Tigers.
Among some of the school’s most notable players are John Wallisa who was the first player to be selected in the NBA draft and Forest Arnold; the school’s first All-American in 1954.
In 1971 Memphis won the Missouri Valley Conference and in the season 1972-1973 the Tigers made it to the NCAA tournament championship game but lost to UCLA.
In the early 80s the Tigers classified to 7 NCAA Tournaments and won numerous Metro Conference titles.
In 2002 the Tigers won the NIT championship and classified to the NCCA Tournament in 2003 and in 2004. |
