The school’s first basketball team was formed in 1905. Prior to join the Conference USA the Owls were part of the Western Athletic Conference.
The Owls men’s basketball program is constantly rated as one of the top basketball leagues in the country. The team has won 10 conference titles while in the former WAC.
Rice has participated in 73 postseasons, 2 Final Four teams and 6 Elite Eight NCAA Tournament teams. The Owls won one NIT Championship and they have participated been in 4 NIT semifinals.
Presently in the season 2006-2007 the Owls finished with a record 16-16 and with an 8-8 record in conference.
During the 2007 NBA Draft Morris Almond, was drafted by the Utah Jazz.
The Owls ended the season 2007-08 losing in the first round of the Conference USA tournament against Southern Miss 50-59 with an overall record of 3-27 and not even closer to win a conference game, ending with a record of 0-16. This season 2008-09, Coach Ben Braun expected much more from his team as he had some newcomers and some returners.
