The school’s men basketball team first coach was Dale Morrison. Another very recognized coach in the history of the Mustangs is E.O. Doc Hayes; he won an SWC-record eight titles and went to six NCAA’s, advancing to the Final Four in 1956.

Among some the team’s most outstanding players we can mention Jim Krebs who became All-American in 1956-57 season; Rick Herrscher who was the SWC Player of the Year in 1957-58 and Stephen Woods named the 1996-1997 “Rookie of the Year”.

During the 2006-2007 campaign the Mustangs had a record of 14-17.

The following season 2007-2008 Coach Doherty and his staff led the team which plays its home games at the Moody Coliseum, ending with a season record of 10-20 and winning just 4 games in the conference. This 2008-09, the Mustangs are aiming for a better performance in the conference games.
