The school’s men basketball team is known as the Golden Eagles and it was created in 1912.
One of the greatest coaches for Southern Mississippi was M.K Turk, who had the team from 1776- 1997.
He finished his career as the all-time winnings’ coach in Southern Miss history with 301 victories, one NIT Championship, two NCAA appearances and 6 NIT appearances.
Among the school’s most notable players are: Wendell Ladner, who had a record in rebounds of 1,256 in just 76 games, an average 16.5 per game and Clarence Weatherspoon, who was named Metro-Conference Player of the Year a record in three consecutive years.
In the 2005-2006 season the Golden Eagles finished their season with a record of 11-17 and 2-14 in the Conference and 9-3 non conference games. |
