The school men’s basketball team is known as the Crusaders and the program first began in 1917.
The team’s first coach was Sidney Winters.
For the 1978-1979 season the team joined the Division I; then the team became part of the Mid Continent Conference (now called Summit League) and more recently in 2007 it joined the Horizon Conference.
The Crusaders are known for being a power house as they achieved 9 Conference Championships and 8 Tournament titles with the Summit League.
Valparaiso Crusaders are currently coached by Homer Drew who is one of the winning’s head coaches in the history of the NCAA Division I.
Coach Drew is in 20th season coaching the team and in his 32st season in his coaching career with a record of 593 victories. The team plays its home games at the Athletics-Recreation Center. Last season 2007-08 the Crusaders ended with an overall record of 22-14.
