The legendary Boston professional baseball team was founded in 1901. During its early years the team was known as the Boston Americans but only a few years later it changed its name to Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox have been very successful as a team; they have achieved 12 AL Pennants, 7 Division titles and 7 World Series championships. Their most recent World Series win was in
2007.
During the 2007 campaign the Boston Red Sox finished with 96 wins, 66 loses and a percentage of .593., giving them first place in the AL East.
In 2008, despite ceding first place in the AL East to the Rays, the Red Sox made it to the playoffs, where they defeated the Oakland A's at ALDS. Boston then faced Tampa Bay. By the beginning of the fifth game in the series, Boston was 1-3 overall. In their seventh inning, the Red Sox had still not scored a single point, losing to the Rays 0-7 and facing elimination. In an extraordinary turn of events, the Red Sox stunned spectators in the final two innings, winning the game 8-7. They then equalized the series before losing game 7, 3-1. It was the greatest comeback in ALCS history. Boston finished the season with a record of 96 wins and 67 losses.
The team is known for being one of the leading teams in baseball history despite an 86-year long streak without a World Series title.
Amongst the Red Sox’s Hall of Famers are Luis Aparicio, Cy Young, Tom Seaver, Al Simmons , Tris Speaker, Wade Boggs, Orlando Cepeda, Harry Hooper, Jimmie Foxx, Waite Hoyt, Tony Perez, Babe Ruth, Bobby Doerr, and George Kell, just to name a few.
Currently, the Red Sox play their home games at Fenway Park.
