The Detroit Tigers are part of the American League’s Central Division. Originally founded in Detroit in 1894, the team became one of the American League’s eight original charter members and is one of only four that remains in its original founding city. The other three are the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox, and the Cleveland Indians.
Originally known as the Wolverines, the club was nicknamed "the Tigers" as early as 1895. Upon the team’s entry into the majors, the name was officially changed.
With incredible players in its first few seasons – including Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Hughie Jennings, and Bill Donovan – Detroit nabbed its first American League pennant in 1907. While the next few years were rocky ones for the Tigers, in 1915, the team resurged. It broke a franchise record of 100 wins –even though it lost the league pennant to the Boston Red Sox – and boasted players that took the top three places in RBIs and total bases. Cobb set the stolen base record at 96, a record that would last for the next 47 years.
Beginning in the late 1930s, the team struggled in the middle for the next several decades, although it did enter the World Series playoffs and in fact claimed its first World Series title in 1935. Finally, in the 1960s, the team began to see shadows of success. The Tigers finally entered the World Series playoffs in 1968, where dramatic pitching by starter Denny McLain helped capture the league pennant from the Baltimore Orioles. The team went on to clinch the World Series championship while pitcher Mickey Lolich was named World Series MVP.
The 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s saw a long decline for the Tigers that was reversed only briefly by a 1984 division and World Series title. In fact, from 1995 to 2005, the Tigers maintained a sub 0.500 record; in 2003, the team would shatter American League records when it lost 119 games. It lost more than 100 games before September.
As a result of the franchise's appalling 2003 season, team president Dave Dombrowski hired a new manager, shortstop Alan Trammell. Trammell signed on new players and the team began to see some improvement. In 2006, the team saw its first winning season - its win percentage was above 0.500 - since 1993. Detroit went on for its first stab at the playoffs since 1987. Even though the team lost the playoffs to the St. Louis Cardinals, it was able to claim the AL wild card.
In 2007, the Tigers ended with an overall record of 88-74 and again saw the playoffs, but were eliminated by the New York Yankees. In 2008, the Tigers held high expectations, but with seven consecutive losses at the beginning of the season, their hopes faltered. In the end, the Tigers struggled with a difficult season and ended 74-88. Despite its troubles, however, the team set a franchise record for attendance, drawing over 3 million fans to Comerica Park.
