Based in Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays are the only team in the MLB based outside the United States. The Jays were established as an expansion franchise in 1977. Like most new franchises, the team finished its first season last place in the AL East, with a 54-107 record. The team maintained its abysmal record throughout the 70s, although once of its players, Alfredo Griffin, did receive a co-Rookie of the Year award.
The Blue Jays’ first break came under manager Bobby Cox in the 1982 season, in which they finished 78-84. Their progress continued until 1985, when they won the first of their five American League East division titles. That season was their best franchise performance to date.
The passage in the 90s proved crucial for the Jays. Not only did their new home, SkyDome, open mid-season, they also acquired several new players who would be key for their future success. The new players – Joe Carter, Roberto Alomar, and Devon White – gave the team a second division title; in 1991, the Blue Jay were the first MLB team to draw a fan base of over four million in one season.
With a record of 96-66, the Jays were awarded their third division title in 1992, then went on to defeat the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, gaining their first World Series championship. In the next season, the team was able to boast 7 All-Star players, and claimed yet another World Series title.
The next years seemed to be promising ones for the up and coming team, but instead proved to be dismal failures. Their record in 1995 was a disheartening 56-88, and the trend continued for the next several years despite a dramatic overhaul of the team’s uniform and its acquisition of superstar Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox.
The early years of the 2000s showed some progress – albeit with some backsliding in 2004 – and in 2006, the team gained second place in the AL East division, the first time they had been able to do so since 1993. 2007 revealed some more back tracking as a result of persistent injuries, at 83-79 and a .512 win percentage.
The team showed improvement in 2008, ending fourth in the division with a record of 86-76, and a .531 win percentage.
Thus far in 2009 the Jays are doing well, with 20 wins and 10 losses.
The Blue Jays can lay claim to Hall of Famers Paul Molitor, Phil Niekro, and Dave Winfield.
