The Chicago Cubs is a member of the National League’s Central Division based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs are one of two remaining charter members of the NL – the other team is the Atlanta Braves. The Cubs are often called the “North Siders,” and are one of two Chicago teams – the other is the American League's Chicago White Sox.

The franchise has a long history; first established in 1870, the team went through a series of name changes, from the Chicago White Stockings to the Chicago Colts to the Chicago Orphans, until finally settling on the team’s current name, the Cubs, in 1902.

From 1903 to 1912, the Cubs burned their names into baseball history. The team claimed four pennants and two World Series titles in a period of five years. In 1906, despite losing the World Series to the White Sox, the Cubs recorded 116 victories and the best winning percentage in the modern era, at .763. The team also claimed two consecutive World Series victories in 1907 and 1908.

Then came the infamous drought: the franchise continued for the next 100 years without a World Series title. Nevertheless, the Cubs have managed several Pennant and Division titles throughout their long history.

The 1990s and first years of the 2000s were difficult times for the Cubs. The team would go 14 years without claiming a division title, until 2003, where the Cubs won the title but failed to enter into the World Series. Their success was only brief, however; the next few years saw the Cubs occasionally managing winning seasons but playing poorly in key games.

Finally, in 2007, a change: the Cubs hired Lou Piniella as manager and added Alfonso Soriano to the team. With a record of 85-77, the Cubs were able to clinch the NL Central but were swept by Arizona during the National League Division Series.

In 2008, the Northsiders managed to defend their NL Central title, entering into the postseason two years in a row for the first time in a century. The Cubs claimed the NL’s best record as they entered into the All-Star break and included eight All-Star players in the team, including Rookie of the Year Geovany Soto. Chicago ended the season with a strong 97-64 record, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the NLDS.
