The Florida Marlins are a member of the National League’s East Division. The team was established in 1991 as an expansion franchise, owned by Jonathan Alba, CEO of Blockbuster Entertainment. In the next years, Alba would work to first renovate and then purchase Joe Robbie Stadium for the new team.
The team won its first game against the LA Dodgers in April of 1993, and was able to avoid last place in its inaugural season, ending five games ahead of last-place New York Mets. The Marlins did, however, fall into the cellar during the next two seasons.
The team saw some improvement in 1996 through the accomplishments of individual players. Then, in 1997, the Marlins hired former Pittsburgh manager Jim Leyland and signed on Bobby Bonilla, Moises Alou, and Alex Fernandez. The new additions proved fortuitous; the Marlins earned a wild card berth and entered the National League Division Series, where they defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-0. The team moved on to the National League Championship Series, where it then bested the Atlanta Braves 4-2. The new team, the season’s underdogs, entered the World Series playoffs against the Cleveland Indians and won in seven games.
Despite the win, financial difficulties led to the team’s dismantling. A series of trades lost Florida some of its key players. Unsurprisingly, the Marlins collapsed the next season, ending with a record of 54-108 – the worst record that year – giving the team the dubious distinction of being the only team to lose 100 games after winning a World Series.
The Marlins were then sold to John Henry and John Boles was hired as manager, but the 1999 season still saw the team at an embarrassing 64-98.
In 2000, the Marlins were able to return to respectability. Young talent drove the team to a fourth place finish that season, finishing with 76-86. The team again changed ownership and management, and in 2002, was able to finished 79-83.
The Marlins made an extraordinary turnaround in 2003. After acquiring new players, the Marlins went on to the Division Series against the San Francisco Giants, coming out victorious 3-1. They moved onto the Championship Series, defeating the Chicago Cubs, and entered into the World Series. Although their opponents, the New York Yankees, were highly favored, the Marlins were able to claim the World Series title for the second time.
Hoping for another World Series, the Marlins were disappointed in 2004, although the team did claim its third winning record at 83-79. They claimed the same record the next season. Although the Marlins had a shaky beginning in 2006, opening with some of their youngest players, the team was able to finish over .500.
In 2007, the Marlins fell back to a losing record at 71-91, finishing fifth in the league. 2008, however, seemed to promise a new beginning. The Marlins had one of the best starts in franchise history but struggled in August due to a lack of offense. Facing elimination from the playoffs after losing four straight games, the Marlins were able to eliminate the New York Mets for the second consecutive season on a final game. The team ended the season with a record of 84-77.
