The Dodgers are based in Los Angeles, California, and are members of the National League’s Western Division. Established in the late 19th century, the Dodgers were first located in Brooklyn, New York. It was then that the team began its century-long rivalry with the Giants, another professional baseball team originally located in New York.
The team has claimed 21 pennant titles, 9 division titles, and 6 World Series titles, the first of which was in 1955.
After being purchased by the real estate businessman Walter O’Malley in 1950, the Dodgers were moved to California in 1958. The team was able to cement the bond with its new fans after defeating the White Sox in 1959 for the World Series title.
The change proved a good one for the team. Dodger Stadium was opened in 1962, and the team went on to claim three NL pennants and two World Series titles in that decade. Much of the team’s success was brought about by the combined pitching talent of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.
Although the Dodgers slid backwards for the next several seasons, they were World Series contenders in 1974, but were defeated by the Oakland Athletics. At the end of the 1976 season, the Dodgers hired manager Tommy Lasorda, who would bring new talent to the team. In 1977 and 1978, the Dodgers would claim the NL West and defeat the Phillies for the NLCS. The Dodgers continued their success into the 1980s, especially after the astounding popularity of 20-year-old pitcher Fernando Valenzuela.
After a dramatic 1988 World Series win against the Oakland Athletics, the Dodgers would not win another postseason game until 2004, although the team would come close several times.
In 2006, the Dodgers would resurge under new manager Grady Little. Much of the season was spent rebuilding the team, but the flurry of trading paid off. The Dodgers raced for the pennant, losing to the Padres but gaining the Wild Card berth. The team was eventually swept by the New York Mets in the NLDS.
In 2007, the Dodgers sent three players to the All Star break and were real contenders for much of the season, but finished with a mediocre 82-80 record, mired in internal disputes. Manager Little resigned that year, and Joe Torre of the Yankees was hired.
In 2008, the Dodgers celebrated their Golden Anniversary in Southern California – 50 years in the state. They captured the National League West title for the first time in 14 years after the Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated. The Dodgers defeated the Cubs 3-0 to claim the NLDS. The team went on to the NLCS, but was defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies.
