The Milwaukee Brewers were first established in 1969 as members of the American League; in 1997, the team was instituted as part of the National League. Thus far, the Brewers, also known as “the Brew Crew” or simply “the Crew,” have claimed one Pennant and one Division title, both in the 1982 season.
Prior to the establishment of the Brewers, the city of Milwaukee had been able to claim the Braves – now the Atlanta Braves – as its representative MLB team. However, when the Braves relocated after the 1965, one of the team’s minority owners, Bud Selig, worked to return professional baseball to Milwaukee. In 1969, Selig purchased the bankrupt Seattle Pilots and moved the team to Milwaukee, changing the nickname to “the Brewers.”
Due to the team’s location and the sale’s short notice, the new team was moved into the AL West division. The Crew’s first several seasons in their new city were unsuccessful; the team’s first winning season would come in 1978. Nevertheless, the team began to acquire a fan base as it spent much of the 1970s filling the roster with popular players.
Finally, success: in 1978, the Brewers won 93 games, finishing third behind the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Just a couple of years later in 1980, the Brewers made their first playoff appearance. In the next several years, the team would claim three league MVPs: Rollie Fingers, Robin Yount, and Pete Vuckovich – the last of whom won MVP for two positions, both shortstop and centerfield.
In 1997, in order to continue interleague competition between the American League and the National League, the Brewers were moved from the AL West to the NL West. A few years later, in 2001, the Brewers replaced their original home at Miller Park with the new Milwaukee County Stadium.
The mid 2000s brought the team increasing success. In 2005, the team finished with its first non-losing record since 1992 with 81 wins and 81 losses. Although 2006 proved another disappointing year, in 2007 the Brewers managed to finish with a winning record, also their first since 1992, just two games behind their rivals that season, the Chicago Cubs. In the same year, first baseman Prince Fielder made baseball history as the youngest Brewer player to reach the 50 home run mark in a single season.
In 2008, the Brewers claimed the National League Wild Card, finishing that season one game ahead of the New York Mets with a final record of 90-72. The team went on to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series – the first time the Brewers had reached the postseason since 1982. Unfortunately, the Crew went no further; they lost the series to the Phillies, 1-3.
