The Philadelphia Phillies are membera of the National League’s East division and are the 2008 World Series champions. The franchise is one of the oldest in baseball history, founded in 1883 as the “Quakers.” The team nickname was changed to the Philadelphias, or the Phillies, shortly thereafter.
The team won its first pennant in 1915, making a World Series appearance, but sank from public view for the next several years. After a change of ownership in the 1940s, the Phillies began to rise again, claiming a league pennant in 1950. The success was short-lived, however, and the team sank again into mediocrity.
Throughout the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, the Phillies stood at the brink of the playoffs, but never quite made it through the threshold. That is, not until 1976, when the team claimed a division title and maintained it for the next two years. Finally, in 1980, the Phillies claimed the NL East and entered the World Series. The team was able to claim its first World Series title that year, defeating Kansas City in six games.
The Phillies entered into the 1990s with some success, winning their fifth pennant in the 1993 National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves. The player’s strike the next year, however, hit the team hard, and the rest of the decade was unimpressive.
Under new manager Larry Bowa, Philadelphia had its first winning season in eight years in 2001; nor did the team fall below .500 after 2003. In 2004, the Phillies moved to their new home at the Citizens Bank Park. In the next year, the team traded away many of its veterans and began developing its young talent.
In 2007, the team earned the dubious distinction of most losses in MLB history: 10,000. Nevertheless, the Phillies claimed the East pennant that season, although they lost the Division Series to the Colorado Rockies. The team left the season with a record of 89-73.
2008 was a magical season for the Phillies, who ended first in the NL East with a 92-70, then defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1, winning the NLDS. Philadelphia then defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 and entered the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The team claimed itself the new champion of baseball, victorious over the rays 4-1.
In the franchise’s long history, the Phillies have managed to achieve 5 Pennants, 7 East Division titles, and two World Series titles.
The Phillies can boast Hall of Famers Kid Nichols, Hack Wilson, Joe Morgan, Dave Bancroft, Roger O’Connor, and Chief Bender.
