The St. Louis Cardinals are members of the National League’s Central division. Founded in 1882, the team, then known as the “Brown Stockings,” began as members of the American Association; a few years later, in 1892, it joined the National League. The team has been known as the “Cardinals” since 1900.
The Cardinals boast a MLB record of 10 World Series titles, second only to the New York Yankees, who claim 26.
In 1920, the Cardinals hired manager Branch Rickey, who would cultivate a strong farming system that would bring the Cardinals their first pennant in 1926 and a World Series title against the New York Yankees. The Cardinals claimed further pennants in 1928, 1930, 1931, and 1934. In 1934, the team would go on to defeat the Detroit Tigers for the World Series.
The team continued its success in the following decade, setting franchise records – 106 wins – claiming pennants – 1942-44, 1946 – and winning the World Series—1942, 1944, and 1946. The 1950s proved an unmemorable decade, but the Cardinals returned in the 1960s after trading pitcher Ernie Broglio to the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Lou Brock. The Cardinals again claimed a World Series in 1964 against the New York Yankees.
In 1966, the Cardinals moved to the new Busch Memorial Stadium, and in the next year claimed yet another World Series against the Boston Red Sox.
After another lull in the 1970s, the Cardinals claimed two World Series titles during the 1980s, against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Kansas City Royals.
In 1996, the team would change ownership and regain some of its success, most notably in the form of Mark McGwire, who broke the single-season record of 70 home runs.
The early 2000s would see the Cardinals falling short of the postseason, but in 2004 the team would claim a best-record of 104 wins and defeat the Houston Astros in the NLCS. However, the team would lose the World Series to the Boston Red Sox.
On April 4, 2006, Busch Stadium was remodeled and opened. In 2007, the Cardinals finished third in the NL Central with a losing record, at 78-84.
2008 marked the Cardinals’ 127th season. The team finished with a winning record, at 86-76, but placed fourth in the NL Central.
