The Washington Nationals are members of the National League’s Eastern Division. The team is currently located in Washington, D.C.; however, the club was first established in Canada as the Montreal Expos in 1969.
In its first decade, the team posted a losing record; it wasn’t until the 1980s that the Expos won their only division championship. The rest of the 1980s saw only a mediocre performance.
In the first years of the 1990s, the team finally experienced some success. The 1994 MLB strike, however, cut the success short, and the Expos began to lose players, fans, and money. In 2002, the MLB purchased the team.
After the purchase, the MLB sought a new home location for the Expos. In late 2004, it was announced that the team would move to Washington D.C. the next year. Washington D.C. had previously claimed a major league baseball team, the Washington Senators, but the team relocated to Texas in 1972. In 2005, D.C. opened its arms to the former Canadians, the renamed Washington Nationals.
The Nationals’ first season began well. By the end of the first half, the Nationals were first in their division, but they slowed to finish the season with a record of 81-81.
The next several years saw a progressive decline for the team, as its record dropped further and further below 0.500. In 2007, the Nationals had a record of 73-89, finishing in fourth place. In 2008, the team finished 59-102, the worst record in the MLB. Six of the team’s coaches were fired. Only Manny Acta and Randy St. Claire were kept.
