Important Facts
- The series originally raced exclusively on oval tracks, as the league was founded in response to the increasing prominence of road courses in the CART schedule.
- The League consists of two series, the IndyCar Series (synonymous of the Indy Racing League) and the Menards Infiniti Pro Series, which is the developmental series for IndyCar.
- Drivers’ safety was also a major point of concern, with an alarming number of drivers injured in the early years of the series, some of them even died. Unlike road racing venues, the lack of run-offs on oval tracks, coupled with higher speeds due to the long straight-aways and symmetrical turns.
- In 2004 the IRL announced three road-racing events including a street race in St. Petersburg, Florida and two road courses, at Watkins Glen International in New York and Infine on Raceway in California for 2005.
- Since July of 2005 there have rumors that three current IRL teams, which include Andretti Green Racing, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, and Rahal Letterman Racing are expected to leave for the rival series of Champ Car in 2007.
- Danica Patrick is considered to be the first female driver whose team was strong enough to provide her with a competitive, even potentially race-winning car.
- In 2006 the series will use an ethanol/methanol fuel mixture eventually going to pure ethanol in 2007.
- The eminent reduction in manufacturer support for the series in 2006 has resulted in a struggle by teams to find financial backing to compete. Several teams, including Panther Racing, have been forced to cut back their operations and even quitting racing activities altogether.
- The split between the CART and Tony George was extremely harmful and both series have suffered as the fan base also split. The battle between competing groups of fans is most active now on the Internet and tends to affect any attempts at impartial views of either racing series.
