2009 IndyCar Series Season

The IndyCar Series is the first level of American Championship Car Racing, which is sanctioned by the Indy Racing League. The IndyCar Series is not an open formula but any engine manufacturer can apply to bring their cars in a three-year term.

Currently, the Italian chassis manufacturer Dallara Automobili – known for its dominance in the Formula 3 – provides the chassis to the teams and Honda provides the engines.

The 2009 IndyCar Series started at April 5 with the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. There are 17 races scheduled this year and among them there will be two new races: the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Toronto Indy, replacing the Firestone Indy 200 and the Nashville Superspeedway.

Bet on the Indy 500!

The 93rd edition of the Indianapolis 500 – premier event of the IndyCar Series – will be held on May 24, 2009 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in Indiana at 1:00pm  ET.

Last year’s champion was the Chip Ganassi Racing team driver, Scott Dixon, who also won the pole position and leaded most of the laps in the main race (115 out of 200).

For this year, Dixon is considered by many as the favorite to win the Indy 500, but the odds also point to the Brazilian Helio Castroneves – winner of the 2001 and 2002 editions – as a fierce pursuer of the title.
