The Atlanta Hawks team was created in 1968 and they were formerly known as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks since it belonged to three cities in the Mississippi River area. After some previous moves, the Hawks were finally transferred to Atlanta in 1968 and adopted their current name.
Throughout the team’s history they have achieved 14 Division titles and 4 conference titles, the latter won mainly during the late 1950’s and the 1960’s.
In the 1957-58 season, the Hawks won their only NBA Championship, dethroning their rival, the Boston Celtics. During the 1980’s, the Hawks was among the best teams in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, winning more than 50 games per season during thanks to their superstar at the time, Dominic Wilkins.
Since the late 1990’s, the Hawks have had a hard time trying to stand out in the league; the actually had the worst season in the franchise’s history in the 2004-05 season, when they finished with a notorious 13-69 record as the worst team in the league that year.
Last season (2007-08) the team went back to postseason action after clinching the last spot for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference; however, they had to face the conference leaders, Boston Celtics, in the first round and thought the force them to play the whole series, they lost they seventh game at the Garden, 65-99.
Nevertheless, Atlanta finished with a better record this season 2008-09 (47-35) and clinched the fourth playoffs berth in the East. The Hawks defeated the Miami Heat in seven games in the first round with home court advantage and moved to the Conference Semifinals, where they were swept by the NBA leaders, Cleveland.
