The Celtics are known as one of the most prominent basketball teams in the sport’s history. Its early beginnings date back to 1946 when they became part of the NBA.
Since the late 1950’s into the late 1960’s, the Celtics aroused to the top in hands of one of the winningest coaches in the history of the league, Red Auerbach; achieving 9 division titles, 12 conference titles and 11 of their record 17 NBA Championships during that era, including 8 consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966. This era also marked the beginning of the Celtics-Lakers Rivalry, since the two teams faced each other six times in the finals and became one of the most intense rivalries in the NBA history.
In 1970 the team had their first negative record in 20 years, but they soon recovered and won two more NBA championships in the mid 1970’s.
During the 1978 NBA Draft the Celtics picked Indiana State junior Larry Bird, though his debut came until the 1979-80 season. Choosing and waiting for Bird proved to be a wise decision; he went to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award and help his team to have the best single-season turnaround until that moment, improving by 32 games the awful 29-53 record of the previous season.
By the mid 1980’s, Larry Bird had won three consecutive MVP awards and had led his team to add three NBA championships more to their history. Bird retired in 1992 and after that the team declined and even missed the playoffs 9 times in 15 seasons.
Neverthelesss, the 21st century awarded the Celtics with their first NBA title after 22 years in 2008. Kevin Garnet from the Minnesota Timberwolves came to the rescue after a sad 24-58 in the season 2006-07, and made a great trio with Ray Allen and Paul Pierce that became the new “Big Three”. The rest of the team, including the bench, had a great contribution as well. They defeated their all-time rival Los Angeles Lakers 131-92 in the game 6 of the Playoffs Finals, to finish the series 4-2.
This season 2008-09 the Celtics began with an amazing 27-2, another NBA record for the franchise. Garnet got injured after the All-Star break and it made them fall a bit, but not entirely since even without him the team managed to finish with a great 62-20, earning the second seed in the East.
In the NBA Playoffs 2009, Boston went to seven games in the first round to the Chicago Bulls, winning the series 4-3. Then, they started and finished the conference semifinals against the Orlando Magic loosing at home, falling to them 3-4 in the series and being unable to defend their title.
