The Orlando Magic team was founded in 1989 as an expansion team of the NBA. The team’s first season ended with an 18-64 win-loss record. After that season, the team improved their performance, but it was not until their fifth season in the league (1993-94) when they clinched their first playoff berth.
During the 1994-95 NBA season, the Magic of the Shaq and Penny duo, appeared in the NBA finals for the first time in the franchise history, but they were defeated by the merciless Houston Rockets in a 4-0 best of seven game series.
A year after, during the 1995-96 season, the team finished the regular season with 60 wins and 22 losses, winning their second division title and ending in the second position of the Eastern Conference, with a pass to the NBA playoffs once again.
After 1996, the team has seen postseason action 8 times, going further the first round only once, just in the 2007-08 season, when they were defeated 4-1 by Detroit in the Conference Semifinals.
Orlando’s 2008-09 regular season ended with a very good 59-23 record at the top of the Southeast Division, earning the third seed of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Orlando defeated the sixth seed Philadelphia 76ers in the first round (4-2), and then went to defeat the defending champion Boston Celtics 4-3 - twice at home - in the Conference Semifinals. In the Eastern Conference Finals, they met the NBA leader of the year, Cleveland Cavaliers, and they started the series greatly stealing the homecourt advance at Game 1. Later, they went on to win the series 4-2, winning also a spot in the 2009 NBA Finals against the L.A. Lakers, where they lost 1-4 in the championship series, loosing the final two games at home.
