The Seattle Supersonics were founded in 1967; the franchise’s first professional participation was during the 1968-1969 season.
The team currently competes in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference.
Throughout their history the team has won 6 Division titles most of the them during the 1990’s followed by 3 conference titles and one championship title in 1979.
The 1990’s decade is without a doubt the Sonics’ best era as the team had a very strong base besides excellent players such as: forward Detlef Schrempf, center Sam Perkins, Kemp and Payton, guard Hersey Hawkins, and guard Nate McMilla. |
Afterwards, there was a period of much unsteadiness which created a very tense atmosphere leading to poor team performances and Head Coach Nate McMillan decided it was time to leave; shortly after retiring.
For the most recent 2007-2008 campaign the new Head Coach is P.J. Carlesimo who is pursuing a new Division title. So far in the season the Sonics are in fourth place in the conference.
The Sonics most all-time rivals are the Portland Trail Blazers; this competition amongst these two teams has a record of 98-94 (Sonics leading) and it has been named the I-5 Rivalry.
