Various of the ACC's traditional rivalries in football include Virginia vs. North Carolina, which is known to be the oldest rivalry in the south; Virginia vs. Virginia Tech, Florida State vs. Miami, N.C. State vs. Clemson and Virginia vs. Georgia Tech.
As of 2005, the ACC began divisional play in football. Division leaders compete in a playoff game to determine the ACC championship and the inaugural ACC Championship Game took place on December 3rd, 2005 at Alltell Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
This division structure leads each team to play the following games:
- Five games within its division
- One game against a permanent rival from the other division
- Two rotating games against teams in the other division
