The Maine Black Bears football team belongs to the University of Maine and it participates in the NCAA Division I for the Colonial Athletic Association.
In 1965 the Black Bears participated in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando Florida against East Carolina becoming the only team from Maine to be present in a Bowl where they lost the game 31-0.
Before 2007 the team competed in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Maine has produced just a few professional football players, such as Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu, center Mike Flynn and defensive back Brandon McGowan.
