Based in Orono, Maine, the Maine Black Bears have been members of the CAA in the NCAA Division I-AA since 2007. The University of Maines Football before moving to the CAA was competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The Black Bears play in Morse Field at Harold Alfond Sports Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 seats. The University of Maine has turned out several players for professional football, including center Mike Flynn, offensive lineman Justin Strzelczyk, and linebackers Lofa Tatupu and Stephen Cooper, among others.
For the 2008 season, an 8-5 record left the Maine team with second place in the CAA North. The Bears finished the regular season losing the last two games against New Hampshire and Northern Iowa.
