Based in Kingston, Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Rams are members of the CAA in the NCAA Division I-AA. After 69 seasons with the Atlantic 10, the Rams decided to change conferences and move to the CAA in 2007. In Kingston, the Rams play their games at Meade Stadium, which was opened in 1928.
During their 110 seasons, the Rams haven’t yet won a title; even worse, in the last 7 years, the RIU has suffered a streak of losing seasons with coach Tim Stowers, who then was replaced by Darren Rizzi for the 2008 season.
In Rizzi’s hands during 2008, the Rams ended in the 5th place of the CAA North with an overall record of 3-9, a record even worse than the one in 2007. As a result, the school decided to fire Rizzi and hire new coach Joe Trainer. With the addition of Coach Trainer, the staff hopes to restructure and improve the football program for the 2009 season.
