Based in Richmond, Virginia, the Richmond Spiders have been members of the CAA in the NCAA Division I-AA since 2001. The Spiders play their home games at the University of Richmond Stadium, which as a capacity of 21,319. The UR fooball team has an all time-record of 479–600–53.
Throughout their history, the Spiders have won nine conference championships. More recently, in 2008, the team had its best season in history, obtaining its first national title. Richmond had defeated Eastern Kentucky, Appalachian State and Northern Iowa to get the FCS National Championship, finally beating Montana 24-7.
Overall, Richmond ended in third place of the CAA South with a record of 13-3, winning the last nine games to obtain the national trophy.
