Colonial Athletic Association
The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) belongs to the NCAA Division I. The conference members are located in East Coast states from Massachussetts to Georgia and it's considered as one of the better mid-major conferences in the country. Most of its members are public universities.
The CAA was founded in 1983 with the name of ECAC, and was renamed as CAA in 1985. With the addition of the Northeastern University in 2005, the CAA got six football programs, the minimum required by the NCAA to sponsor football.
Then, in 2007, the CAA invited the University of Richmond to become a football-only member and this left the Atlantic 10 Conference with only 5 members, therefore the remaining A-10 football programs decided to join the CAA, also on a football-only basis, as it was inevitable the disappearance of the A-10 football conference.
The new Colonial Athletic Conference will have 13 members, although one of them, the Old Dominion University football program, will begin until 2009. The remaining 12 members are divided in two groups: Northern Division and Southern Division.
