Based in Clarksville, Tennessee, the Austin Peay State Governors have been members of the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Division I-AA since 1962. The Governors have played their home games at the Governors Stadium since its opening in 1946.

The Governors has won only one championship in 1977, although seven Governors players have joined the NFL.

With a 2-9 overall record for the 2008 season, the Austin Peay ended in 8th place of the OVC, finishing in the conference play with an even 2-6 record and losing the last game of the season against SE Missouri St 30-33.
