The Pittsburgh Panthers play for the University of Pittsburgh and are members of the Big East Conference since 1991. Pittsburgh Football has a long and glorious history.
They started playing football in 1890 at the Recreation Park, which was actually a baseball park in Pittsburgh, until 1899. In 1900 they began playing at the Exposition Park which also was a baseball park.
From 1909 to 1924 they played at the Forbes Field, which was again originally made as a MLB Park, and afterwards they moved to the Pitt Stadium. In 2001 they moved to the Heinz Field. |
The Pittsburgh Panthers football has also gained a reputation as a national leader in innovation when Bobby Grier became the first African-American player to break the Bowl game color-barrier in 1956.
Their mascot is a Panther which was adopted at a meeting of Pittsburgh students in 1909.
