Based in Portland, Oregon, the Portland State Vikings are members of the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Vikings joined the conference in 1996 although the team began its first football season in 1947.

The Vikings play in the PGE Park, which was opened in 1926 but had major renovations in 2001 and is now own by the City of Portland. Since the Vikings’ first began participation in Division II of college football, the team has placed second nationally twice.

The "run & shoot" method of football offense was first applied at the college level by Vikings coach Darryl "Mouse" Davis.

Overall, 2008 has proven a not-so-good season for Portland State. After reaching seventh place in the BSC with a 4-7 record, the Vikings won the last game but ended sliding lower in rankings than in 2007.
