The Big South Conference was established on August 21, 1983 for other sports but it was not until the start of the fall of 2002 when they became part of the National Collegiate Athletics Association's Division I-FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), then known as Division I-AA, for football.
The members are located in the region of southeastern United States, from institutions of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The Big South's football members are:
- Coastal-Carolina University,
- Charleston-Southern University,
- Gardner-Webb University,
- Liberty University,
- Presbyterian College,
- Virginia Military Institute.
With the addition of football in the conference, the Big South is now fielding 18 sports.
