Based in West Lafayette, Indiana, the Purdue Boilermakers are members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Boilermakers competed as Independent until 1889. In 1890, they joined the Indiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association and, finally, the Big Ten Conference in 1896. The team has played its home games at the Ross-Ade Stadium since 1924.
During their years at the Big Ten, the Boilermakers have won 8 championships during the seasons of 1918, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1943, 1952, 1967 and 2000. The Boilermakers have also won a national championship in 1931 and have appeared in a total of 15 post-season bowl games, compiling a record of 8-7.
For the 2008 season, the Purdue football team ended with an overall record of 4-8 and finished in ninth place of the Big Ten. In conference play they held a 2-6 record. In 2009, Purdue ended in 7th place in the Big Conference. They improved their conference game performance, holding a 4-4 mark for the season, but still the team overall lost 7 and won only 5 games in 2009.
