Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Golden Gophers joined the Big Ten in 1896 after playing in the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the Northwest. The Golden Gophers have played their home games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metro dome since 1982, but starting in 2009 they began to play their games at the TCF Bank Stadium.
Minnesota has won 18 Big Ten Conference titles, including seven with head coach Bernie Bierman during the seasons of 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1940 and 1941. The Minnesota football team has also claimed six National titles; five in hands of Coach Bierman. The Gophers currently have a record of 5-8 in Bowl Games appearances.
In 2008, the Minnesota football team finished with an overall record of 7-6 and obtained the fourth place of the Big Ten with a conference record of 3-5. The Gophers ended the season losing their last five games. In 2009, the Golden Gophers finished 8th in the Big Ten with an overall mark of 6-6. They will be facing Iowa State for the Insight Bowl in the Sun Devil Stadium in Arizona on December 31st 2009.
