Based in Iowa City, Iowa, the Hawkeyes are members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Hawkeyes joined the Big Ten in 1899, after competing as an independent team (1889–1891; 1897–1899) and in the Western Interstate University Football Association from 1892 to 1896.
In the Hawkeyes’ football history, the team has captured one Western Interstate Conference title and 11 Big Ten Conference titles. The last conference championship title was obtained in 2004 with Kirk Ferentz as head coach. The Hawkeyes have also won a national championship back in 1958, with an 8-1 record and defeating LSU in the 1959 Rose Bowl 38-12.
In 2008 the Iowa football team finished with an overall record of 9-4 and obtained the fourth place in the Big Ten with a conference record of 5-3. The Hawkeyes ended the season winning the last four games against Penn State, Purdue, Minnesota and South Carolina.
In 2009 Iowa held a 10-2 overall record, to finish up in second place in the Big Ten conference. The Hawkeyes had a 6-2 record in conference games. To top off a very good season,they defeated South Carolina 31-10 to win the Outback Bowl.
