Based in State College, Centre County, Pennsylvania, the Penn State Nittany Lions are members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten in 1990 after competing as an Independent football team. The team plays its home games at the Beaver Stadium, which opened in 1960 and has capacity for 107,202.
Since joining the Big Ten Conference in 1990 Penn State has won three Big Ten championships in 1998, 2005 and 2008. Also, Penn State has attained two national championships, both under Coach Joe Paterno’s leadership during the seasons of 1982 and 1986. Since the football program started back in 1887, Penn State has had seven undefeated, untied, seasons. The Last one in 1994.
In 2008, the Penn State football team finished with an overall record of 11-2 and obtained the first place of the Big Ten with a conference record of 7-1. The Nittany Lions won the conference title after winning the last season game against Michigan State.
In 2009, however, the Nittany Lions ended in 3rd place in the Big Ten, in a tight dispute with Ohio State and Iowa for the first place. The three teams held the same 10-2 overall record. Penn State will face LSU in the Capitol One Bowl in Florida, on January 1st, 2010.
