Based in East Lansing, Michigan, the Michigan State Spartans Wolverines are members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I. The Spartans joined the Big Ten in 1953 after competing in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Presently, the MSU team plays its football games at the Spartan Stadium, which opened in 1923 and was formerly known as the College Field, Macklin Field or the Macklin Stadium.
The Spartans have attained a total of 6 national championships (1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965, and 1966), two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships (1903 and 1905), and 6 Big Ten championships (1953, 1965, 1966, 1978, 1987, and 1990). The biggest rivalry of the Spartans is against Penn State University. Both teams compete every year for the Land Grant Trophy.
With a 9-4 overall record in the 2008 season, the Michigan State football team ended in third place of the Big Ten, with a conference play of 6-2, losing the last two games of the season against Penn State 49-18 and Georgia 12-24.
This 2009 season, the Spartans held a 4-4 conference game mark, and a 5-7 overall, to take 6th place in the Big Ten Conference. Michigan lost its last game of the season against Penn State. They will be facing Texas Tech on January 2, 2010 in the Alamo Bowl.
