Based in Evanston, Illinois, the Northwestern Wildcats are members of the Big Ten Conference in NCAA Division I. The Wildcats joined the Big Ten in 1896 and play their home games at the Ryan Field Stadium, which opened in 1926.
The Wildcats are still to win a Conference title or a National title, but they have appeared in eight Bowl games without much success either. They have lost seven of these. The last was at the Alamo Bowl against Missouri in 2008, where they lost 23-30.
For the 2008 season, the Northwestern football team ended with an overall record of 9-4 and finished in fifth place of the Big Ten. In conference play they ended with a 5-3 record, winning the last game of the season against Illinois 27-10. They kept strong during the following season, and once more finished fifth in the conference in 2009. The Wildcats will face Auburn on January 1st 2010 for the Outback Bowl. Once again, they are the underdog by 7 points.
