The official colors of Colorado are silver and gold. According to the book Glory Colorado, these colors were adopted by the class of 1888, as a symbol of the mineral wealth of this state.
In 1921, as football became more popular, there were complaints from the Colorado students that silver and gold did not look good on football jerseys but nothing was ever changed.
Colorado’s mascot, the buffalo named Ralphie, is the most unique mascot in all of intercollegiate athletics. He is a real buffalo and first appeared in 1934. Colorado’s nickname was officially bestowed upon the school's teams at halftime of the Homecoming game against Utah.
